The English Symphony (3 nights)

Elgar did not complete his First Symphony (1908) until he was past fifty, but its huge success encouraged the establishment and growth of one of the most important developments in 20th century music: the English symphony. Over the course of this weekend we will explore this rich and varied legacy of masterworks, including the two symphonies of Elgar, and others by for example Vaughan Williams, Walton, Bax, Rubbra, Arnold and Tippett.
