Belle Epoque Istanbul: 1855 to 1915

Start: 22 August 2010 at 6:00 p.m.
End: 24 August 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
With Dr Peter Clark

Nineteenth century Turkey is generally seen as an Empire in decline, “the sick man of Europe”. The city of Constantinople/Istanbul was living on its past. But a closer examination shows that the city, between the Crimean and First World Wars, was an extraordinary multicultural hub of the world, going through great changes as it adjusted to an international economy. Constantinople’s expansion saw cultural and creative diversity in art, music and architecture that made it one of the most exciting cities in the world. The course looks at a legacy which perhaps has lessons for the twenty-first century.
